Radiation Safety Division


Radiation Safety would like to keep all our users up to date on radiation protection issues and Institutional policies that can affect their daily operations, or that may simply be interesting from an academic standpoint. We'll also use this page to let you know about any new features we may add to the Radiation Safety section of the OESO Web site, so we hope you'll return frequently!

New Medical Center Radiation Safety Committee Chairman Named -- Dr. Leonard Spicer, University Distinguished Professor of Radiology and Biochemistry, has been appointed Chairman of the Duke University Medical Center Radiation Control and Radioactive Drug Research Committee by Chancellor Dzau. He replaces Dr. Christopher Coughlin of Radiation Oncology. (Thursday, January 20, 2005)

Animal Care and Use Committee Protocol "Wizard" Now Available! Experiments on animals involving ionizing radiation require Radiation Safety review before submission to the Duke University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (DUIACUC). Radiation Safety offers an on-line template that can assist you with completion of Section VII-D ("Hazardous Agents") of the DUIACUC protocol. The template compiles a properly formatted list of animals and agents, and prepares "model" wording for the required "Statement of Precautions". "Radiation Safety Techniques" Course Material Now Available On-line -- The visuals and textual material for our popular "Radiation Safety Techniques" course is available at our Web site in the "Slides" section at www.safety.duke.edu/radsafety/slides/techniques.pdf. Recycle Your Old P-32 Shipping Canisters -- Amersham Biosciences now offers a cost-free recycling program to recover the plastic canisters used for shipping beta-emitting compounds. For details, see our Web page at at www.safety.duke.edu/radsafety/recycling/default.asp. (Monday, February 02, 2004)

"Live" Update Training Goes Quarterly -- Effective January 1, 2004, the lecture-style presentations of the Radiation Safety Update Training for Laboratory Workers" (RS-310) will be offered on the third Thursday of January, April, July and October. The previously scheduled monthly offerings have been cancelled. On-line update training for both laboratory directors and staff can be completed at any time. (Monday, December 15, 2003)
