Particle Accelerators

Accelerator Program Overview

The Radiation Safety Division supports the radiation safety operations at a range of particle accelerators across the medical and academic sides of the Duke University campus:

  • Multiple medical linear accelerators used for patient treatment and clinical research
  • One cyclotron for radiopharmaceutical and radiochemical research
  • Multiple particle accelerators, including a 1.2 GeV storage ring based free electron laser light source and a 10 MeV tandem Van de Graaff at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). Accelerators are used for (a) primarily nuclear physics research and (b) basic biological research

Our responsibilities encompass:

  • Licensing and Compliance
  • Training and Education
  • Monitoring and Oversight
  • Technical Consultation
  • Emergency Response
